Carl Richard Tagliaferro

Carl Richard Tagliaferro, age 84, passed away peacefully in his Plainville, Massachusetts home on Sunday, March 22, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 13, 1935, he was the son of the late John E. and Rose (Pomer) Tagliaferro.  He was raised in Roslindale and graduated from Charlestown High School with the Class of 1953.  Following his graduation, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during the Korean War.  He was stationed aboard the USS Wisconsin as an electrician’s mate, working in the turrets.  Upon his honorable discharge in 1957, Carl attended a barbering school in Boston and began working alongside his father and grandfather in their barber shop on Beacon Street in Brookline.

 

Carl married his beloved wife, Geraldine Goglia, on September 2, 1957.  The young couple made their home together in Hyde Park and Carl enrolled in the Boston Police Academy.  He was appointed a patrolman with the Boston Police Department in 1961 and shortly thereafter, he moved his family to Roslindale.  In 1968, Carl saw the opportunity to move his family out of the city, settling in the small, suburban town of Walpole, Massachusetts.  After moving to Walpole, Carl maintained his position with the Boston Police Department, moving up the ladder, earning the rank of detective.  In addition, he maintained his position as a barber, supplementing his family’s income.  Carl retired from the Boston Police Department in 1995, however maintained his connections with the department though the Italian American Police Association, the Boston Detective’s Association, the Boston Policemen’s Union Retirees, and the Retired State Employees Association.  While he was officially retired, Carl continued working for several years, giving back to his community through the Meals on Wheels program.

 

Throughout his life, Carl enjoyed traveling.  He spent many years camping with his family in New Hampshire, prior to purchasing his cottage on Lake Winona in Ashland, New Hampshire.  He was right next door to his dear friend and cousin, Donald Pomer, and between the two cottages, there was always room for the whole family to get together for one of Carl’s famous clambakes.  In his later years, Carl found his love for cruises and together with his wife and friends, took many memorable trips.  Back at home, Carl looked forward to his daily walks around Walpole and catching up on the Boston sports scene, cheering on the Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins.  However, more than anything, Carl loved being surrounded by his grandchildren and always took time to support them in any of their events.

Loving father of Karen M. Horan and her husband, Kenneth, of Upton, Susan A. Cochrane and her husband, Tom, of Plainville, Michele D. Deeb and her husband, Bob, of Attleboro, and the late John V. Tagliaferro.

Cherished grandfather of Kenneth Horan of Saugus, Andrew Horan of Beacon Hill, Jonathan Horan of Upton, Kristina and Eric Mounsey of Bellingham, Thomas and Lori Cochrane of Bellingham, Michael and Jessica Cochrane of Coventry Rhode Island, Joseph Cochrane of Plainville, and Danielle Deeb of Hull and great grandfather of Eric, Tyler, Hannah, Thomas, and Bryson.

As a result of the ongoing health crisis in the world and our community and with genuine concern for the well-being of all involved, Carl’s family has decided that his burial services will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held when we return to calmer and healthier times.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice, 10 Emory Street, Attleboro, MA 02703.  Arrangements by James H.
