Charles P. Mahoney, Jr.

September 18, 1937 — April 12, 2019

Charles P. Mahoney, Jr., of Mansfield, formerly of Eastham and Walpole, MA, passed away Friday, April 12th, at the Norwood Hospital. He was surrounded by his children and his brother.

Charles was born in Boston, MA, where he was lovingly raised, along with his younger brother Paul, by his mother, Marie Gallagher and her sister, Kathryn Gallagher. Charles attended Boston College High School, and after graduation began a successful career at the American Telegraph and Telephone Company, where he was employed for some 30 years, retiring in the early 90s.

In 1960, Charles met the love of his life, Joanne (Norton) Mahoney, at a dance at the Holy Name Church in Roslindale, MA. They married in May of 1962 and started their family soon after with the arrival of their oldest, Beth Marie (deceased). Soon to follow were Barbara Jean (Burke), Paula Marie (Boylan), and Peter Charles. Charles and Joanne enjoyed almost fifty years of bliss together, making their home finally in Eastham MA, where they provided a loving and supportive retreat for their children and each and everyone of their 10 grandchildren whenever they would visit.

It was during his time living on Eastham, that Charles truly found his home. He enjoyed his daily fishing jaunts with his buddies, including his brother-in-law, Captain Bob. He loved traveling to “check out the beaches” with his grandchildren as they arrived for a visit and those beach visits would invariably end with a trip to the arcade, a round of mini golf, or a quick stop for ice cream. During the winter months, Charles and Joanne would travel for a few weeks to the west coast of Florida, and his brood would duly follow. Those vacations on Manasota Key were some of his most treasured times, fishing with his grandchildren, and explaining and experiencing the local wildlife to them. He also managed to find the BEST donut shops around, in any place that he visited, on his morning trip to get the newspaper.

Charles is survived by children, Barbara Jean Burke and her husband, Robert, of Walpole, Paula Marie Boylan, and her husband Edward, of Mansfield, and Peter Charles Mahoney, and his wife Jacqueline, of Franklin, and his younger brother Honorable (Ret) Paul F. Mahoney and his wife, Lois, of Boston. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Lauren, Peter, Sara, Joseph, Hannah, Alison, Robert, Emily, Charles. Charles is pre-deceased by his eldest daughter, Beth Marie, and his grandson of choice, Ani Paul Burke Whiting. Charles also leaves behind several sisters and brothers in law, as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews, all of whom dearly loved their Uncle Charlie.
