Donald Michael Murray

May 20, 1936 — June 21, 2019

Donald Michael Murray, age 83, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Born in Boston on May 20, 1936, he was the son of the late John L. Murray and Catherine (O’Brien) Murray. Donald was raised in Roxbury and Jamaica Plain, spending much of his time helping out at his family’s café in Roxbury, and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School with the Class of 1953.

While still in high school, Donald met the love of his life and future wife, Mary M. (McFarlin) Murray. He would often recall how the moment he saw Mary for the first time, he knew that she was “the one.” Donald’s intuition proved to be correct, and the two were married on May 31, 1958 at the St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Jamaica Plain. The young couple would spend the next few years starting a family together, welcoming their children, Donna, Michael, and John.

Shortly after high school Donald began his career in insurance, gaining experience at the Dewick and Flanders Insurance Agency and at the Boit, Dalton and Church Insurance Agency before being offered a position at Alexander and Alexander in Boston. Here, Donald started out in sales, and would retire as a Chairman of the Board in Massachusetts and the Executive Vice President of Sales at Alexander and Alexander.

When he wasn’t hard at work, Donald enjoyed spending his time outside; a member of the Walpole Country Club, the Charles River Country Club, and The Strand in Naples, Florida, Donald was an avid golfer. He loved sailing in his sunfish boat, and spending his down time reading, cooking, and cheering on his favorite New England Sports teams, the Patriots and Red Sox. More than anything, Donald loved spending time with his family, and will be remembered as a wonderful man who would do anything for those he loved.

Beloved husband of Mary M. (McFarlin) Murray.
Loving father of Donna M. Murphy and her husband Rick of Walpole, Michael Murray and his wife Lisa of Medfield, and John F. Murray and his wife Carolyn of Medfield.
Cherished grandfather of Kathleen Sordillo, Mary Beth Amaral, Rich Murphy, Katelyn Murray, Matthew Murray, Ryan Murray, and Shannon Murray, and great-grandfather to three.
Brother of Paul Murray of Manchester By the Sea, and the late Jack Murray.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Donald’s Life Celebration on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 from 4:00 to 8:00PM and Wednesday, June 26, 2019 from 10:00 to 10:30AM at the James H.
