Edward J. Henderson, Sr., age 79, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at the Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford, Massachusetts, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 3, 1942, he was the son of the late Edward H. and Elizabeth C. (Murphy) Henderson. He was raised in the Jamaica Plain area of Boston, where he attended Jamaica Plain High School. As a three-season standout athlete, Eddie was named captain of the football, hockey, and baseball teams prior to his graduation in 1960.
Following his graduation, Eddie enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War. While he was stationed in Germany, Eddie requested leave to come home to marry his beloved wife, Carol A. Robinson. They were married on October 20, 1962 in Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Jamaica Plain, and shortly thereafter, Eddie returned to active duty in Germany. Once his tour of duty was completed, he came back stateside to the Granite City Army Depot in Illinois, where Carol was able to join him. He was honorably discharged in November of 1963, after earning the rank of Specialist.
Upon his return home from the Army, Eddie and Carol made their home together in West Roxbury and later in Hyde Park. While living in the Boston area, Eddie worked various jobs until taking a position with the Boston Globe, working as a printer. In 1970, Eddie and Carol left the city, making their home in the small suburban town of Walpole, Massachusetts, where they raised their three sons, John, Edward, Jr., and David. After settling into his new home, Eddie continued his career with the Boston Globe for many years before his retirement in 2006.
Throughout his life, Eddie was an avid outdoorsman, who loved spending the autumn hunting in the woods of New England, especially in the State of Maine. He also had the opportunity to travel to Colorado, where he spent countless hours hunting in the mountains. Because of his skill set, he was asked to serve as a hunting guide at a close friend's camp in New York.
Eddie's love for the outdoors did not end with hunting, as he looked forward to camping throughout New England. When his sons were young, Eddie took them on a trip every year, never staying in the same camp twice. Eddie's camping crew got bigger as he welcomed his grandchildren, as he was thrilled to pass on the traditions to them.
In addition to visiting the states of New England, Eddie enjoyed traveling to some warmer climates, always with his wife by his side. Together, they visited various islands in the Caribbean, Arizona, California, and spent their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary in Hawaii. Back at home, Eddie loved following his favorite hockey team, the Boston Bruins.
