Grazia Gioioso

Grazia "Grace" Gioioso, age 78, passed away on March 17, 2026, at her home in Walpole, Massachusetts, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sicily, Italy on October 12, 1947, she was the daughter of Giuseppe and Grazia (Mattaliano) Gangi. As the eldest daughter, Grace helped to care for her younger siblings as well as her grandmother during her youth, all the while dreaming of a life in America. In November of 1967, those dreams came true when Grace had the opportunity to emigrate, moving to East Boston, Massachusetts to live with her Aunt. Shortly after arriving, Grace was introduced to Luigi Gioioso through mutual friends. She fell in love with his beautiful blue eyes and the pair were engaged by the spring.

Grace married the love of her life, Luigi Gioioso, on October 27, 1968, in Sacred Heart Church in East Boston. The young couple made their married home in Watertown, Massachusetts and Grace settled into the life of a housewife and homemaker. She soon added another role, that of a mother, as she and Luigi lovingly welcomed three children in the coming years. Grace took enormous pride in her home and meticulously maintained it, keeping the highest of standards even with three little ones to care for and long after they had grown. Her children were always well dressed, and their meals were always home cooked.

In January of 1983, the Gioioso family moved to Walpole, Massachusetts, a community Grace and Luigi would call home for the rest of their lives. Grace made friends everywhere she went, building rapport and friendships with ease. She had endless amounts of love to share and welcomed everyone with open arms. As her children grew older, this would extend to her new son and daughters-in-law, as well as their families. Family was at the heart of everything for Grace; there was nothing more important and nothing that could make her happier. She was especially thrilled when she became a grandmother, beyond proud to be called Nonna. Her grandchildren’s friends often called her “Nonna,” a reflection of how warmly she welcomed everyone into her life, treating them with love, respect, and the same care as her own family. She was an avid Patriots fan. Not only was she a fan of professional football, she loved to cheer on her grandchildren in their various sports and activities.

Grace had a generous spirit and a great attention to detail; everything she did was done with intention and thoughtfulness. She was often seen hosting and attending regular parties and social gatherings with her husband and family. Grace was also a very determined woman. She taught herself to speak English by watching television and learned how to drive when her youngest was five; never letting anything hold her back. A phenomenal cook, Grace learned the cooking style of her husband's region of Italy to make him meals that reminded him of home. She shared her culinary expertise with her family, teaching them how to craft delicious dishes that they would attempt to imitate, but could never quite replicate. She loved tradition and passed on customs to her children and grandchildren, whether it was how to cook a special dish or a holiday how-to. Every summer, Luigi would harvest fresh fruits and vegetables from their gardens and Grace would teach her children, and later her grandchildren, how to cook, can, or pickle their bounty.

Grace also liked to travel. The Gioioso family spent time in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, eventually purchasing a vacation home in Moultonborough in the early 1990's. She and her husband took many amazing vacations, visiting Las Vegas and California, venturing to Monaco and Italy, and taking a train ride across Canada, as well as several cruises to the Caribbean. Later, in their retirement, Grace and Luigi purchased a condo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, enjoying the warm weather a few months at a time.
