James Thomas Swansey, age 60, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, in Walpole, Massachusetts. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 24, 1966, he was the son of the late Bernard T. and Frances B. (Presby) Swansey. Jim spent his early years in Waltham and New Bedford, before his family settled in Norwood, when he was seven. After graduating from Norwood High School with the Class of 1985, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country. He was stationed in Alaska, where he received training as an engineer in jet propulsion technology, earning the rank of Sergeant. While spending time in Alaska, Jim took his liberty to perfect his form on the slopes, even serving as a ski patroller on Mount Alyeska. Upon his return home to Norwood in the summer of 1989, Jim quickly found work with Russell Electric, putting his Air Force training to work.
Jim married his beloved wife, Laurie Ann Ryan, on September 8, 1991, at Saint Denis Church in Westwood. The couple made their home in Norwood, purchasing Jim's childhood house, where they welcomed three sons, Christopher, Ethan, and Michael. Jim's career brought him to Taunton Municipal Power and Light, before venturing off to form his own company CE Automation in 2002. A few years later, after Michael was born, CE Automation (for Chris and Ethan)became S3 Power—named for his three boys. Using the skills he learned as an engineer, he successfully operated a business working with medium voltage testing and commissioning, as well as line construction.
In 2013, Jim moved his family to Walpole, where he was able to build his business and perfect his golf game at the Walpole Country Club. Six years later, Jim brought his clubs to the Cape, purchasing a vacation home in West Dennis and taking on the courses of Bayberry and Dennis Highlands. Being on the Cape wasn't all about golf for Jim, as he looked forward to skippering his boat down the Bass River for the open ocean. Once out at sea, Jim would cast his fishing line, trying to catch the big one. At the end of the season, it was time to trade in the rods and clubs for skis and boots, taking to the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont. Some of his favorite trips were to Ragged Mountain, Jay Peak, Mount Sunapee, and Okemo, often bringing his boys along for all of his adventures.
Jim built his own business from the ground up and operated the business with dedication often while traveling around the country and working harder than anyone his boys knew. After ensuring that all of his employees would be cared for, he sold his company, S3 Power, in 2024 to QE Solar. His love and dedication to his work kept him on board with the company, ensuring the transition was seamless. While he worked hard, nothing was more important to Jim than his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Laurie, and loved being a dad to his three sons. Jim was delighted at the birth of his granddaughter Natalie, earning the title of Grandpa, with a smile on his face.
Beloved husband of Laurie Ann (Ryan) Swansey.
Loving father of Christopher A. Swansey and his wife, Gillian, of Port Jefferson, New York, Ethan R. Swansey of Wrentham, and Michael J. Swansey and his girlfriend, Reeghyn Blow, of Jamaica Plain.
