Jean Ann Derwin

Jean Ann Derwin, a devoted mother, grandmother, and lifelong learner, passed away peacefully at age 94 on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Needham, Massachusetts, surrounded by her loving children. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1932, she was the second of three daughters of James and Delia (Curley) Costello.

Jean graduated from Cathedral High School in Boston and began her career at Boston Gas Company prior to her marriage.

Jean married her beloved husband, John Hubert Derwin, on May 10, 1958, at Saint Peter’s Church in Dorchester. The young couple made their first home in Dorchester before settling in Westwood.

While raising her children, Jean returned to the workforce, first working at Shreve, Crump & Low in Boston and later retiring from Northrop Corporation in Norwood. She ensured each of her children obtained a college degree before earning one of her own from Northeastern University, attending evening classes while working full time.

Jean was an expert knitter, regularly creating beautiful items such as afghans, hats, and cable-knit sweaters. She also enjoyed sewing and bowling, was an avid crossword puzzle solver, and loved Irish music.

Jean is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Marie Derwin of East Walpole and Elizabeth Anne Derwin of Millis, and her son, John M. Derwin and his wife, Katherine, of Raymond, New Hampshire. She was the cherished grandmother of Cameron Derwin of Seattle, Washington, and Jack Derwin and his fiancée, Becky Chambers, of Brooklyn, New York.

At the request of Jean’s family, all funeral services will be private, with interment in Westwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jean’s name may be made to Cathedral High School by mailing a check to the Advancement Office, 74 Union Park Street, Boston, MA 02118, or by visiting https://www.cathedralboston.org/.
