Joan Theresa (Mahoney) Smith, age 89, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, Massachusetts, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on June 16, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Johanna (Driscoll) Mahoney. Joan grew up in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, where, as a young child, she took on the significant responsibility of helping to care for her disabled mother. That early duty instilled in her a deep sense of resilience, strength, and compassion that defined her throughout her life.
After graduating from Saint Patrick’s High School in 1954, Joan began her career as a secretary with Keystone Custodial Funds. She married her beloved husband, Paul M. Smith, on May 27, 1961, in her hometown of Boston. The couple first settled in Dorchester, spent a few years in Stoughton, and eventually made their home in Walpole to raise their family.
Joan was a kind, caring, and generous woman who loved to have a good time and brought joy to everyone around her. She poured her heart into being a devoted mother to her four children, creating a warm and welcoming home filled with love and laughter. An excellent cook, she delighted in preparing hearty meals for her family, often showcasing her special talent for Italian dishes despite her Irish roots. While the children were growing up, Joan worked nights as a waitress at the Golden Steer in Walpole. She was also a determined and capable homemaker who took on many home improvement projects, from replacing windows and moving walls to repointing the chimney. There was no task too big or small for Joan. Her family often came home from school to find fresh paint or new renovations underway.
Joan cherished being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She developed a close and special connection with each of her grandchildren and her great-grandchild, always bringing fun and laughter wherever she went. For many years she enjoyed entertaining extended family and friends at the pool, creating joyful memories that will be treasured forever. She formed many meaningful friendships in her Walpole neighborhood and in Cape Coral, Florida, and had a special gift for making friends wherever she went. In her free time, Joan also enjoyed relaxing with a good true crime book, and later, as her eyesight changed, she turned to her favorite TV shows like Judge Judy and Dateline.
When her husband retired, the couple happily gave up home cooking. They enjoyed frequenting local restaurants such as the Horse and Carriage, Finnegan’s Wake, and Luciano’s, and they wintered at their house in Cape Coral, Florida. During the warmer months, Joan cherished family adventures around New England. Trips to Cape Cod, Maine, and Newport were affectionately called her “Nana Unleashed” excursions.
Joan will be remembered for her generous spirit, her caring heart, and the lively joy she brought to every gathering.
