Joanne A. McCarthy

Joanne A. McCarthy, age 90, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham, Massachusetts, surrounded by her loving family.  Born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 24, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Albert J. and Josephine Christine (Sullivan) Kelley.  She was raised in West Roxbury and graduated from Roslindale High School with the Class of 1950.  Joanne continued her education at the Wyndham Secretarial School in Boston, graduating in 1952 and later took courses at Merrimack College in Andover.

Joanne married her beloved husband, Humphrey L. McCarthy, Jr., on April 26, 1958, at Holy Name Church in West Roxbury.  The young couple initially made their home in Waltham and later Needham, before settling in Sharon in 1966.  As her family grew, Joanne took on the role of a homemaker, raising and caring for her five children.  As her children grew up, Joanne took a position with the Town of Sharon, working as a teacher's aide at the high school.  She went on to work as a medical secretary first at the Westwood Lodge and later at Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital in Stoughton. 

More than anything, Joanne was devoted to her family, treasuring every minute with those she loved.  She looked forward to holidays and special occasions, when her family gathered together, and was especially delighted to welcome her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Loving mother of Humphrey McCarthy of Attleboro, Kelley A. Grassi and her husband, Anthony, of Reading, Patrick P. McCarthy and his wife, Tara, of Annapolis, Maryland, Kathleen M. McGrath and her husband, John, of Sharon, and Kevin M. McCarthy of Norwood, MA.

Cherished grandmother of Kaitlin, Kelsey, Kristen, Matthew, Michael, Evan, Ella, Justine, Shane, Vanessa, Evelyn, Steven, Sean, and Nicole; and great grandmother of Carter, Madison, Russell, Mason, and Theodore.

Sister of the late Albert Kelley, Barbara Mower, and Paul X. Kelley.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Joanne's Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 59 Cottage Street, Sharon on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 10:00 AM.  Interment will follow in Rock Ridge Cemetery in Sharon.  Visiting hours are respectfully omitted at the request of Joanne's family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joanne's name may be made to the charity of one's choice.
