John F. (Jack) Arthur passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 8th, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Jack was a man of great integrity with an unwavering sense of justice and a strong work ethic. Above all, he was devoted to his family.
Jack grew up in the Roxbury and Dorchester sections of Boston and attended Dorchester High School and Newman Preparatory High School. He enlisted in the US Navy and received an honorable discharge. Jack was a proud and active member of the Teamsters Union, Locals 25 and 653. He served as a trustee for the Teamsters Retiree Club, Chapter 653. Jack enjoyed his career as a truck driver and later as Union Steward and mentor to new drivers. He was a regular attendee at the quarterly union meeting for many years.
Jack was an enthusiastic (and vocal) sports fan. He was well known for “encouraging” his favorite Boston sports teams, the Bruins and Celtics. He was a competitive member of the Dorchester Bowling League for many years. He enjoyed playing pool and golf. Jack had a strong baritone voice and enjoyed singing; when he lived at Oak Point in Middleboro he sang with the choral group.
Jack’s most important and successful accomplishment is that of a devoted family man. He and Maggie were married for 65 years. Together they raised three children and have been blessed with eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Jack was well known in the stands of hockey rinks and basketball courts, and on the sidelines of soccer and lacrosse fields, at gymnastic and swim meets, and at wrestling matches, as well as at dance and piano recitals.
Jack leaves behind his loving wife Maggie (Manning); their children Jean Dunn and her husband Bob; Paul and his wife Leanne; and Kevin and his wife Jeanne; grandchildren James, Michael, Emily, John, Joseph, Daniel, Allison, Kevin; and great-grandson Rhys. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends. Jack was predeceased by his parents David and Pauline (Dempsey), Arthur, his sisters Jean Hartin and Barbara Hayward, and his brothers David and Robert Arthur.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Jack's visitation on Sunday, July 20th, 2025, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 21st, 2025, in Saint Mary's Church, 176 Washington Street, East Walpole, at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John's name may be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or by visiting www.stjude.org.
