John Sera

July 6, 1946 — May 5, 2022

John Sera, age 75, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at his home in Norwood, Massachusetts. Born in Alliance, Ohio on July 6, 1946, he was the son of the late James and Julia (Surten) Sera.  He graduated from Alliance High School in 1964.  Following his graduation, John began his history studies at Mount Union College in Alliance, where he joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

While in college, John met his wife to be, Donna Morgan, and they were married on July 26, 1969, in her hometown of Steubenville, Ohio.  After their wedding, they made their home in Connecticut, settling in Middletown. There they raised their two daughters, Amanda and Morgan.  John worked in retail management for 32 years and retired in 1999. Following his retirement, John was a faithful volunteer at the Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown for many years.

Faith was an important part of John’s life. While he lived in Connecticut, John was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Middletown and Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. At the time of his death, he was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Norwood.

John was an avid basketball fan, holding season tickets to UConn Women's Basketball and the WNBA's Connecticut Sun.  He also loved perusing used bookstores with a particular interest in Civil War and World War II history. Other favorite pastimes included collecting coins, watching classic movies, and listening to his favorite music of the 1960s.

More than anything, John was a devoted family man and a dear friend, who treasured the time he spent with those he loved.  He had a close relationship with his daughters and their husbands and was delighted at the birth of his grandchildren, reveling in his role as Grandpa and “Schmoopy.”  In the past year, John and Donna began splitting their time between their homes in Middletown and Norwood, Massachusetts, to be closer to their daughters and their families.

Beloved husband of Donna Morgan Sera.

Loving father of Pastor Amanda L. Warner and her husband, Britton, and Morgan E. Jean-Pierre and her husband, Mark, all of Norwood.

Cherished grandfather of Abigail Warner, Julia Warner, John Warner, Cyrus Warner, Preston Jean-Pierre, and Parker Jean-Pierre.

Brother of Helen Hahlen and her late husband, Robert, of Naples, Florida and Julianne Klippert and her husband, Fred, of Augusta, Georgia.

Uncle of Jan Hahlen-Muller and her husband, Art, of Naples, Florida, and Kim Porter and her husband, Duke, of Akron, Ohio.

Loving son-in-law of the late Donald and Arlene Morgan.
