John William "Jack" Shone, Jr.

October 13, 1932 — January 27, 2020

John William “Jack” Shone, Jr., age 87, passed away in the Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton, Massachusetts on Monday, January 27, 2020.  Born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 13, 1932, he was the son of the late John William and Lillian M. (Regan) Shone.  He was raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts and graduated from Boston Technical High School with the Class of 1947.  Following his graduation, Jack initially took a position in the storeroom of the Boston Jordan Marsh, however seeing an opportunity at Boston Edison, he quickly took a job working as a lineman.

At the age of 20, Jack enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean War.  While at home on leave, Jack married his beloved wife, Patricia Joy O’Neil, on June 6, 1953 in Saint Kevin’s Church in Dorchester.  Following their wedding, the young couple made their home together in Virginia and Jack shipped out for his tour of duty in Germany.  Upon Jack’s honorable discharge from the Army, he and Joy moved back north, making their home together in West Roxbury and Jack returned to Boston Edison, continuing his work as a lineman.

After a few years of climbing poles, Jack decided he’d had enough and put himself through night school at Northeastern University, earning credits towards his degree, in addition to working part time at Sears.  He graduated Cum Laude from Northeastern with his bachelor’s degree with a focus on contract law in 1963 and went on to take a sales position with Boston Edison.  In the mid-1960s, Jack moved his young family out of the city, making their new home in Walpole, Massachusetts.  He continued working for Boston Edison, holding the position of Shop Steward for the local sales union, until his retirement in 1993.  In addition, Jack served as the past president of the Edison Employees Club.

When Jack wasn’t hard at work, he enjoyed socializing with friends, playing cribbage at the Irish Heaven in Norwood, bowling at the local lanes, or catching up at the Norwood Elks Lodge, where he was a longtime member.  He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years.

Jack worked incredibly hard to provide a wonderful life for himself and his family.  He looked forward to his annual trips with his family to Whalom Park and camping trips to Greenfield State Park in New Hampshire.  As an avid travel enthusiast, Jack drove his motorhome all across the United States, visiting many of the National Parks along the way.  In more recent years, he found his love for cruises and always thought his cruise to Alaska was his best trip ever.
