Joseph Michael Morgan

Joseph “Joe” Michael Morgan, a lifelong resident of Walpole, Massachusetts, passed away at his home on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Joe was a devoted husband, father, baseball

legend, and cherished friend. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence, humility, and unwavering love for his family and community.

Born and raised in Walpole, Joe was a proud son of his hometown. He graduated from Walpole High School before attending Boston College, where he distinguished himself as a standout athlete in both hockey and baseball. A gifted competitor and natural leader, he led the Boston College hockey team in scoring as a junior and was elected captain of the baseball team. In 1952, he signed his first professional baseball contract with the Boston Braves, beginning a lifelong journey in the game he loved.

Joe served his country in the United States Army before returning to baseball, eventually making his major league debut in 1959. During his playing career, he appeared with the Milwaukee Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals, and Kansas City Athletics. His passion for baseball continued long after his playing days, as he built an extraordinary career as a manager, coach, scout, and mentor.

His greatest impact came in the dugout. Joe earned widespread respect managing throughout the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox organizations, including nine memorable seasons with the Pawtucket Red Sox, where he became the longest-tenured manager in franchise history. In 1988, he was called upon to manage the Boston Red Sox during one of the most memorable stretches in team history. The club’s incredible turnaround became known across the country as “Morgan Magic” as Joe guided the Red Sox to an American League East championship with his calm leadership, baseball wisdom, and steady confidence. Over his lifetime in baseball, he influenced generations of players, coaches, and fans with his integrity, knowledge, and love of the game.

Yet, for all his accomplishments on the field, Joe’s greatest pride was always his family.

He was the devoted husband to the late Dorothy “Dottie” (Glebus) Morgan, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and devotion. Together they built a home filled with

warmth, laughter, and unwavering support for their children. Joe was a loving and devoted

father to his four children: Catherine and her husband, Ed; Joseph Jr. and his wife, Robin;

William and his wife Janet, and Barbara Jean. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Teti of

Dartmouth and Theresa Allen of Walpole. He was predeceased by his brothers, William and James.

Joe celebrated his family’s accomplishments, encouraged them through life’s challenges, and took immense joy in watching his family grow. His kindness, patience, sense of humor, and quiet strength made him not only a wonderful father, but also a beloved grandfather to Anthony, Ashley, Rachel, Paige, Jake, and Michael. His great grandchildren were blessed to know him, as well. Marco, Evelyn, Vincent, AJ, and Arielle will cherish having spent time with him as children.

A loyal Walpole native through and through, Joe never forgot where he came from and never

left the town he grew up in. Despite a career that took him to ballparks across the country,

Walpole was always home. He treasured his friendships, valued his neighbors, was devoted to his faith at Blessed Sacrament Church, and remained deeply connected to the community that shaped him. Whether sharing stories of baseball, providing his gardening tips, offering encouragement, or simply enjoying the company of friends, Joe made everyone feel welcome. He will be remembered not only as a baseball man, but as a genuinely good man whose character left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Joe’s legacy lives on through his family, the countless players and coaches he mentored, and generations of Red Sox fans who will forever remember the excitement of “Morgan Magic.” His life was a testament to hard work, humility, perseverance, and love—a life well lived and one that will continue to inspire. He will be so very deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and baseball fans across the country.
