Joyce Christine McCormick

Joyce Christine (Wood) McCormick, age 87, passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 18, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Mildred (DeLuca) Wood. Joyce was raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston, where she graduated from Hyde Park High School with the Class of 1955.

Joyce married her beloved husband, John H. McCormick, Sr., on August 24, 1957. The young couple initially made their home in Hyde Park before moving into their house in the Mattapan neighborhood, welcoming four children. As her children began to grow up, Joyce took a position with the Mug and Muffin in Roslindale, working as a waitress. She also returned to her education, taking night courses at Boston College to earn her associate's degree in management.

In 1978, Joyce and John left the city behind, moving their family into a home on Hemlock Street in East Walpole. Two years later, Joyce took a position with the Boston Public Schools, working as a transportation officer. After spending four years in East Walpole, the McCormick family moved across town to Neponset Street in South Walpole and in 1988, after John passed, Joyce made her home on Diamond Street in Walpole.

That same year, Joyce embarked on her career in public safety, taking a dispatcher's position with the Walpole Police Department. She quickly learned everything about the position and became 911 certified. As a testament to her career, Joyce was presented with several awards and accolades over the years and built a wonderful relationship with the many officers she worked with. While she moved to Plainville in 1995, she was still well known around Walpole as "Joyce the Voice" until her retirement in 2009. In her retirement, Joyce made her home in Norton, keeping close connections with her family.

Throughout her life, Joyce kept a busy social calendar. She was a member of the North Attleborough Elks Lodge, remaining active at their events. Joyce was also an auxiliary member of the Blackstone Valley HOG Chapter, attending all the motorcycle runs and selling raffle tickets. As an avid crafter, Joyce loved attending local fairs, setting up a table to sell her many decorations and ornaments. While Joyce enjoyed giving back to her various communities, she also looked forward to trips to Twin River and Foxwoods, trying her luck to see if she could win big.

More than anything, Joyce was devoted to her family. As a devoted mom, Joyce loved watching her children grow up and start families of their own. She was delighted at the birth of her grandchildren, proudly taking the title of "Nana." Joyce was known for her legendary Christmas parties, hosting family and friends for a night of celebration, with every detail in perfect order. The party was also an excellent opportunity for Joyce to gift various craft projects that she had completed for her family over the past year. Whether is was a knit blanket or a scrapbook, Joyce always made sure her family knew they were loved.
