Leo James Shubitowski Jr.

December 23, 1923 — September 26, 2020

Leo (Lee) J. Shubitowski, Jr found final peace on September 26, 2020 at his son's home in Easton, MA.

The son of Leo J. and Ellen (Stapleton) Shubitowski, he was the only boy of six children on a working farm where he milked the cows, fed the chickens and plowed the field behind a matched pair of Belgian draught horses. He graduated Port Hope High School shortly after the start of World War II.

Lee joined the Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California where he met fellow Marine Josephine (Ciano) of Newton, MA.  It is said she outranked him in the Marines and that continued to be the case through 41 years of marriage.

Lee and “Jo” started married life in Massachusetts but soon moved to Harbor Beach, Michigan where they were joined by a son, Leonard, and a daughter, Mary.

The family moved back to Massachusetts and settled in the small town of Walpole.  Lee was employed by Blessed Sacrament Church and School where the pastor was Monsignor Russell Davis who was not only his boss but would become his lifelong friend.  Lee followed the Monsignor to his next assignment at St. Paul's Church and School in Wellesley where he worked until his retirement.

After 41 years of marriage, Lee lost his “Jo” and retired soon thereafter. Never one to stay idle, he was soon delivering lawnmowers and snow blowers to local residents. It was during this time that he met and married the second love of his life, Johanna (Fournier). Lee and Johanna spent the better part of two decades happily together before her passing in 2019.

The last year of his life was difficult as he fought the many battles of an aging body. Remaining mentally agile, Lee would spend his mornings reading the daily newspaper, devouring every word – from beginning to end. He could tell you every college basketball statistic, always looking forward to his favorite time of year – “March Madness.”

Lee was preceded in death by his two "Jo's" and his 5 sisters: Agatha, Doris, Esther, Clara, and Patricia.

He is survived by his son, Len (Kathy) Shubitowski, his daughter Mary (Mike) Rouille and 4 grandchildren, Michael, Caitlin, Christopher and Jennifer plus 2 great-grandchildren.  His extended family includes many nieces and nephews and their offspring whom he took great pleasure in tormenting! Lee developed especially close relationships with his niece Debbie (Veal) Oglenski of Grand Blanc, MI and his nephew Chuck Hrenchuk of Walpole. He also developed a lasting friendship with his second wife's daughter Sandra.

Friends may visit at the James H. Delaney and Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole MA on Thursday, October 1, 2020 between the hours of 4 PM and 8 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will held at Blessed Sacrament Parish, Walpole, MA at 10 AM on Friday, October 2, 2020.

On September 21, the family was devastated by the sudden loss of Lee's beloved goddaughter Erin (Oglenski) Modrzynski of Clarkston, MI. Erin is survived by her husband, Kristopher, and her three children, Sam, Grace, and Will, all at home. In lieu of flowers, the family would be most grateful for your donation to the Modrzynski Children College Fund -
