Margaret E. "Peggy" (Wright) Gookin, age 86, passed away on Monday, August 11, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 26, 1938, she was the daughter of the late John and Edna Rose (McKay) Wright. Peggy was raised in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, attending local public schools. Following her graduation from high school, Peggy continued to make her home in Boston, where she welcomed two sons, John and Michael.
Peggy married her beloved husband, John Vincent Gookin, on February 2, 1964, in Abington, Massachusetts and together the couple made their home in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, welcoming a son, Daniel. Peggy was an accomplished horseback rider which led to her and John purchasing the Windy Hill Horse Farm of Sharon, Massachusetts in 1966. Peggy lived out her dream of having horses in her backyard, taking rides, and enjoying the scenery of the suburbs. In addition to working the farm, caring for her horses, and raising her family, Peggy found work with Gibson Engineering in Norwood, serving as the company secretary for over twenty years.
In 1974, Peggy and John sold the farm and settled into their home on the shores of Lake Massapoag in Sharon, where they continued to raise their family. They went on to spend a brief time in Franklin before settling in Walpole, Massachusetts. Peggy’s career brought her to R.E. Erickson in Walpole, where she spent many years working as a secretary before her retirement.
After making their home in Walpole, Peggy and John quickly became involved in their new community, joining the Walpole Couples Club and enjoying nights full of dancing, laughing, and having fun. The fun spilled over to the couple's home and Peggy graciously opened her doors to host countless parties and get togethers over the years. Her skills as a hostess did not end with her friends, as Peggy loved inviting her family into her home for all the holidays, putting together a wonderful meal for everyone to enjoy together. In more recent years, Peggy returned to Sharon, where she made her home at Whitney Place, now CareOne.
Throughout her life, Peggy held an appreciation for artwork, across all mediums. Her style and taste were always well represented in her own home, carefully choosing certain pieces to accompany her decor. She was a talented artist in her own right both in stenciling and painting creating beautiful pieces of her own.
Peggy enjoyed traveling, in particular, her trips to Las Vegas that she and John would take at least three times a year. Lady Luck was often on her side at the slot machines and poker tables. She loved to tell her many stories of the royal straight flush! Peggy even continued playing poker at CareOne, launching an unofficial poker club where she would enjoy games with fellow residents several times a week.
Loving mother of John Liberatore of Walpole, Daniel Gookin and his wife Kellie of Sharon, and the late Michael Liberatore.
Stepmother of Ronald Gookin, Terresa "Terri" Gookin and Lorrie Gookin.
Sister of the late Marilyn Werning and her late husband Chuck.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Peggy's visitation on Monday, August 18th, 2025, from 9:00am to 11:00am in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole.
