Marianne Berta (Dennert) Froese, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, in East Walpole, Massachusetts, surrounded by her devoted family.
Born on November 20, 1937, in Berlin, Germany, Marianne was the cherished daughter of Paul and Elfrieda (Hofmann) Dennert. She was raised in the small village of Ladeburg, nestled in the rural countryside approximately 40 minutes outside of Berlin. Her early years were shaped by the challenges and resilience of post-war East Germany, where she came of age during a time of reconstruction and profound social change.
Marianne attended local schools before continuing her education at a business college, where she developed strong secretarial and administrative skills that would later serve her well in her professional life. One year prior to the construction of the Berlin Wall, she moved to West Germany for a job opportunity. It was during this time that Marianne met the love of her life, Helmut Karl Froese. Helmut, a German expatriate who had previously emigrated to the United States, had returned to Germany to visit family when they were introduced by mutual friends at a gathering. Their connection was immediate and profound—truly love at first sight. Following a brief but deeply meaningful courtship, Marianne made the courageous decision to leave her homeland and immigrate to the United States. On July 29, 1962, she and Helmut were married at Saint Luke’s Church in Dedham, Massachusetts, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, devotion, and mutual respect.
The newlyweds settled in Dedham, where Marianne embraced her role as a homemaker. Their family grew with the joyful arrivals of their two children, Eva and Eric. She delighted in sharing special places with her family, including cherished vacations to Cape Cod, trips to Canada, and the beloved annual tradition of apple picking in New Hampshire. Amid her responsibilities as a mother, Marianne also undertook the significant and meaningful challenge of becoming a United States citizen—an achievement she accomplished with great pride in the late 1960s.
As her children matured, Marianne reentered the workforce, bringing her skills and dedication to a position as an insurance broker with a firm in Wellesley, Massachusetts. In 1977, the Froese family moved to nearby Walpole, where Marianne joined Winslow Warren Insurance. She became a valued and respected member of the company and remained there until her retirement in the late 1990s.
In retirement, Marianne and Helmut enjoyed many happy years together, embracing opportunities to travel and create new memories. Highlights included a memorable cruise to Alaska and a visit to the majestic Grand Canyon. When Helmut’s health began to decline, Marianne remained steadfast in her commitment, tenderly caring for him with unwavering love and devotion, faithfully honoring her marriage vows “in sickness and in health.”
Marianne’s life was deeply enriched by her relationships with family and friends. She maintained a strong connection to her German heritage and ensured that her children grew up immersed in its language and traditions. When the children were younger, she organized several extended family trips to Europe, where her family spent six weeks divided between Helmut’s relatives in West Germany and her own in East Germany. She also cultivated lasting friendships within the German expatriate community, particularly through the Boylston Schul-Verein, first located in Jamaica Plain and later in Walpole. These friendships endured throughout her life, marked by joyful gatherings, holiday celebrations, New Year’s Eve traditions, birthdays, and summer barbecues.
At home, Marianne found peace and joy in her garden, where she lovingly tended a vibrant array of flowers that brought beauty and life to her surroundings. Her garden became a haven for birds, and she took particular delight in the annual return of hummingbirds, carefully setting out feeders each spring to welcome them. She was also an avid reader, often unwinding with a novel by Danielle Steele or an engaging mystery. Her exceptional cooking and baking, shared generously with those she loved, will be deeply missed.
Marianne was the beloved wife of the late Helmut Karl Froese.
She was the loving mother of Eva Crowley and her husband Richard of Middleborough, and Eric Froese and his wife Shannon Lestan of East Walpole.
She was the cherished grandmother of Nolan Froese, Ethan Froese, Christopher Lestan and his wife Jess.
Marianne is survived by her sister, Bärbel Beyer and her husband Helmut of Ladeburg, Germany.
She was the aunt to Henry Beyer and his late wife Conny, and to the late Ronald Beyer, survived by his wife Gudrun.
She was the great-aunt to Bonny and her husband Bilal, Sophie and her husband Daniel, and Björn and his wife Alex.
She also leaves behind many extended relatives and dear friends whose lives she touched.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. A private interment ceremony will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marianne’s name may be made to the ALS Association, 1919 University Avenue West, Suite 175, St. Paul, MN 55104, or by visiting www.als.org/accelerate.
Arrangements have been entrusted to James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, Walpole.
