On Thursday morning, December 4, Marie E. Cuneo, age 90, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family. Born in Stoughton, MA on September 23, 1935, to Elizabeth McDonald and Clarence Hurley, Marie moved to Sharon when she was four years old and lived the rest of her life there.
Marie is a graduate of the Sharon High School class of 1953, and she later attended Burdett College in Boston.
On September 8, 1957, Marie married Frank Cuneo, also from Sharon. They were married for over sixty-one years, and they raised their three children there. Marie was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She delighted in having her family around her; nothing made her happier. Marie attended everyone’s events, enjoyed baking with them, and was proud of their many accomplishments.
Second only to her love for her family, was Marie’s love of the town of Sharon. Growing up near the lake, she often shared many happy memories of her childhood years swimming and skating there with her siblings. Marie worked as a teachers’ aide at the high school during the late 60s, the 70s, and early 80s, before moving on to the business world. She returned to serve the town in the water department and then as Business Manager of the Department of Public Works for many years. Marie worked at the polls for every election beginning in 1961 until 2023. She also worked for many years at town meetings. Being a social person, Marie loved seeing everyone she knew in town at the polls and town meetings. She and her husband were active members of the Sharon Historical Society. They assisted with many events over the years including the strawberry shortcake festival and the yard sales. She served in many different roles including vice president and president of the society. While working for the town at the DPW, Marie was instrumental in saving the beautiful beech tree that became the center piece of Beech Tree Park near the lake. Marie was very proud of her family’s roots in Sharon and of the fact that her grandfather helped, with hammer and nail, to build Our Lady of Sorrow’s Church.
Marie loved to work, not retiring until she was 73 years old. However, she made time for hobbies such as baking; watching the birds, deer, and red squirrels in her yard; knitting, crocheting, doing puzzles, and reading.
Marie is survived by her children Jane Kittredge, John Cuneo and his wife Jill, and Joan Hathaway and her husband Paul. She is also survived by her grandchildren John Kittredge; Nicole Salvo and her husband Robert; Kristen Cuneo; Elizabeth Hathaway, Matthew Hathaway and his wife Erica, and Stephanie Hathaway; and great grandchildren Dante, Brayden, Brody, and Kinsley Salvo. Marie also leaves behind her sister Carol Simonin, brother-in-law Bob Simonin, and their family; her sister Jeanne’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe and Connie Cuneo and their family; cousin, Anne Marie Basiliere; and many other nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Frank J. Cuneo; son-in-law Walter Kittredge; her parents, Clarence and Elizabeth Hurley; and her siblings Eleanora Berteletti, Jeanne Berteletti, Claire Botsch, Elizabeth Whittington, Bill Hurley, Dan Hurley, and Ann Briggs.
