Mary Elizabeth Flynn

Mary Elizabeth (Baston) Flynn, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, faith, and cherished memories.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Mary was the daughter of Henry Joseph Baston and Florence Catherine Hopf. She graduated from Saint Aloysius High School in 1952. A woman of remarkable wit, poise and personality, she was proudly recognized as a former Miss Subway NYC, a distinction that reflected the charm, confidence, and spirit that remained part of her throughout her life. She was deeply proud of her New Jersey heritage and carried that pride with her always.

Mary was married to her beloved husband, John “Jack” Flynn, for 62 wonderful years. Together, they built a life filled with family, friendship, laughter, and travel. Mary and Jack traveled extensively over the years, creating countless memories and sharing many adventures together.

Above all, Mary treasured her family. She was the devoted mother of Maura Erwin and her husband, Robert Erwin; Paul Flynn and his wife, Carina Su Flynn; and Elissa Flynn-Poppey and her husband, Thomas Poppey. She took immense pride in her grandchildren: Catherine Erwin, Robert Erwin, Grayson (Flynn) Murphy (wife Haley), Hope Mary Erwin, Caroline Flynn, and Thomas Erwin; and her great-grandchild Rosaline Murphy. Her family was her greatest joy, and she delighted in watching each of them grow, celebrating their accomplishments and creating special memories along the way.

Mary was a woman of deep faith, and her faith was an important source of strength and comfort throughout her life. She also had a curious mind and a lively interest in the world around her. She loved watching CNN, following politics, and staying informed about current events. She enjoyed lively conversations and never shied away from sharing her opinions. She was a lifelong fan of the Red Sox and Celtics—never missing a game. Mary cherished her friendships as well. She especially treasured the wonderful friends she made in her exercise class, where the companionship, laughter, and camaraderie brought her great happiness.

Mary also had a deep love for animals. They held a special place in her heart, and she especially adored her beloved grand dogs, Bella and Brimley. Her affection for animals was another reflection of the kindness and tenderness she brought to the world around her.

Mary will be remembered for her loving heart, her devotion to her family, her deep faith, her New Jersey roots, her adventurous spirit, and her wonderful ability to make those around her feel loved and welcomed. She leaves behind a family who will carry her memory forward through the stories they share, the traditions she helped create, the adventures she enjoyed, and the love she gave so freely.

She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Mary's visitation on Tuesday, September 1st, 2026, from 10:30 am - 11:30 am in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 Diamond Street, Walpole, at 12:00 PM following visiting hours. Interment will be private, at Saint Francis Cemetery in Walpole.
