Mary Ann Gorman

Mary Ann Gorman, formerly of Greenfield Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born on June 1, 1961, and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Thomas "Tucker" Gorman and Georgette “Kiki” DiSciullo Gorman. She was immensely proud of her Irish and Italian heritage and treasured the history and traditions that came with them.

Mary earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and later a Master of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She remained in the area and devoted her life to teaching children of all abilities. She cared deeply about her students, and they loved her in return. Mary also became a published author under the pen name “Gary Morgan”, after finding that her literary submissions under this male pseudonym yielded a higher success rate. Mary was a genealogist, historian and devoted researcher, with a particular passion for the civil war.

Mary had an enormous love of life and made her own happiness. She was determined, strong, courageous, witty, quirky, and, by all accounts, wonderfully stubborn. These characteristics helped Mary to persevere during her battle with cancer and to achieve her personal bucket list. She was also a gifted storyteller, sharing her knowledge of the civil war throughout the country. Mary’s audiences loved listening to her talks and learning from her extensive knowledge.

Mary also had a huge heart for cats. She was generous with her time, rescuing, fostering, transporting, and raising money for cats in need throughout her lifetime. Above all Mary loved her family. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Fox of Amherst and Beth Duncan, her husband Joe, and their son Theo of Northampton. She is also survived by her brother Tom Gorman and his wife, Dawn, of Utah; her brother Tim Gorman; her nephew Trevor Gorman; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, former students, and others whose lives she touched.

Mary lived her life on her own terms. She loved deeply, learned endlessly, laughed often, and always, always, always followed her own path. She will be remembered for her wicked wit, her generous heart, her fierce independence, and her extraordinary love of life. Her legacy lives on in the people she loved, the children she taught, the animals she saved, the history she preserved, and the countless stories she shared.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Mary's visitation on Thursday, August 27th, 2026, from 10:30 am - 11:00 am in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. Interment will follow at Pondville Cemetery, Norfolk.
