Newell Dean Squires

February 27, 1925 — May 12, 2022

Newell Dean Squires, 97, of Walpole, formerly of Needham, Winchester and Squam Lake, Holderness NH, died in his home on May 12, 2022.  Dean was born in Arlington, MA on February 27, 1925.  He graduated from Winchester High School in 1943, and immediately joined the Navy.  He served in the South Pacific from 1943 -1946 in Destroyer Squadron 23 (aka the “Little Beavers”), on the USS Charles Ausburne, which received a Presidential Unit Citation.  He graduated from Harvard College in 1950, and Tufts Medical School in 1954.  Dean was predeceased by his wife Alice (Hussey) who he married in 1950.  Beloved and caring father to Newell Dean Squires, Jr. of Monclair NJ, and his deceased wife Susan; Elizabeth S. Wigon and her husband Jeremy of Topsfield, MA; Anne C. Squires and her husband David W. Stokes, of Kennebunkport, ME; and Phyllis Squires Epstein and her husband Steven of Norwood, MA.  He is also survived by six grandchildren: Harry, Graham, Madeline, Isabelle, Michael, and Elizabeth, and one great grandchild, Sylvie Emma Squires. 


Dean was an avid traveler and was drawn to places that were off the beaten path. He especially loved Russia, and spent years studying Russian language, literature, and history. He climbed in the Caucasus and the Alps, and hiked to the base camps of Mt. Everest. Although he loved global travel, in many ways his heart always remained with his beloved Squam Lake, in the house his father built in 1929.  For many years, Dean was an active member of the Epiphany Parish in Walpole, MA.  


A Christian burial service will be held at 10:00 am on May 5th at the Epiphany Parish, On the Common at 62 Front Street, Walpole, MA.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tufts Medical School, at the Fund for Tufts Medicine, Trustees of Tufts College, PO Box 55036, Boston, MA 02205-8652 or the Squam Lakes Association, at Squam Lakes Association, 534 US Route 3, Holderness, NH 03245


 Burial will be private.  Arrangements by James H. Delaney and Son Funeral Home.
