Norma Mary (Marier) Shruhan, age 89, passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at her home in Norfolk, Massachusetts. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 20, 1936, she was the daughter of Normand George and Josephine Katherine (McCann) Marier. Norma and her brother Paul were raised in Dedham, Massachusetts where she attended the local public schools, graduating from Dedham High School with the class of 1954.
Norma married the love of her life, James Leo Shruhan, on September 7, 1957, in Saint Mary's Church, in Dedham. The pair had met at a local roller skating rink during her senior year of high school and had been inseparable ever since. They made their married home initially in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston, before purchasing their home in Norfolk. Norma and Jim were blessed with four wonderful children in the coming years.
In addition to raising a family, Norma also worked a variety of jobs doing data entry and secretarial work at local companies such as Norfolk Data and the Kendall Mills, before working for the Town of Norfolk. She started out as a secretary for the Council on Aging, but her dedication and passion led to Norma eventually becoming the director of the program. Norma took great pride in the work she did, knowing how much it helped her community, especially as part of the building process for the current senior center. In 2016, at the young age of 80, Norma decided it was finally time to take a well-deserved retirement. Stepping away from her director role allowed Norma to step into a member roll, enjoying all of the benefits of the program with far less responsibility. Yet still she volunteered, running trivia and helping to organize luncheons, in addition to enjoying classes like "Knit Wit" and the drum circle.
The most important part of Norma's life was her family. She was incredibly family oriented and loved to have everyone all together. When her children were young, she and Jim would take them camping every weekend, and for two weeks during the summer they would take an adventure, visiting places such as Gettysburg, Niagara Falls, and Fort Ticonderoga. As her children grew older and began families of their own, Norma embraced the opportunity to spend time with the younger generations. She and Jim loved to have the kids over for weekend sleepovers, which often led to the grandparents and grandchildren getting into mischief together, like the time Norma started a food fight with a whipped cream pie or various squirt gun attacks. Norma was often the one instigating the mischief; though she was rarely suspected given her quiet demeanor.
The holidays were always a big celebration; Norma home made Irish soda bread and green jello for Saint Patrick's Day and decorated the whole house for Halloween even though they rarely received trick or treaters. The whole family would be invited over for Easter Eve to decorate eggs and the following day to do an egg hunt. Christmas was an adventure in itself, with multiple generations taking up every bit of space in the family home in Norfolk to open presents, which would inevitably lead to a wrapping paper fight. In the summer time, Norma looked forward to their annual Cape Cod vacation; starting in 1993, four generations would gather together in Truro for a week of relaxation on the beach and delicious clambakes.
