Norman Stephen Ober, Sr., age 83, passed away peacefully in his Walpole, MA home on Monday, April 30, 2018. Born in Franklin, MA on July 30, 1934, he was the son of the late Albert P. and Catherine A. (Scanlon) Ober. He spent his early years in Franklin where he enjoyed being with family and friends. His family then moved to Walpole and Norman graduated from Walpole High School with the Class of 1952. He was employed by Kendall Mills in Walpole. He later took a position with the Foxboro Company before working for his father's business, A. Ober and Sons, Inc., a U.S. mail contractor.
Norman married his beloved wife, Elinor L. Jennings, on January 14, 1956, in Blessed Sacrament Church in Walpole. In 1957 Norman was drafted into the United States Army and shipped out to basic training. He was stationed with the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Knox, KY, until his honorable discharge in 1959. After coming out of the service, the family settled in Sharon, MA, where he continued working for A. Ober and Sons. He took numerous courses at the New England Motor Rate Bureau in order to advance himself and improve the family business in a regulated trucking industry.
In 1975 Norman founded Trans-Star Trucking Company, also located in Walpole. He went on to open Freight Traffic Management, Inc. in 1993. He retired in 1999, but kept the business in his family, transferring control to his daughter Pamela.
Work was his life, but he always took time for his family. He enjoyed family gatherings and their summer home on West Island. He was delighted at the birth of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved spending time with each one of them.
Norman is survived by his wife Elinor L. (Jennings) Ober, to whom he was married for 62 years. He also is survived by his three children and their spouses, N. Stephen Ober, MD, and his wife Reese of Yarmouthport, MA; Gregory P. Ober and his wife Maria of Walpole, MA; and Pamela A. Look and her husband Jay of Columbia Falls, ME. He was the cherished grandfather of Joshua Look, Jacob Ober, Jeremy Look, Allison Ober, Giles Ober, Brett Ober and Alec Ober, and the step-grandfather of Nicholas Pantages. He had two great grandchildren, Jase and Dexter Look.
Norman was the brother of Ronald Ober of Norfolk, MA, and the late Albert Ober, Jr., Arlene Donahue, Alberta Heinz, Joseph Ober, Louise Goodman, Dorothy Geehan, John Ober, George Ober and Kathleen Keeney.
