Paul Joseph Mellett Jr. lived a life defined by kindness, tenderness, and humility. He died on August 31, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children.
He was born on May 1, 1955, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Paul Joseph Mellett Sr. and Eleanor (Dwyer) Mellett, better parents than any child could hope for. He grew up in Roslindale, in a triple-decker that bustled with family, neighbors, and the traditions of his Boston Irish Catholic roots. That upbringing shaped a life rooted in simplicity, loyalty, and quiet strength. His childhood summers were spent in Marshfield at his family’s beloved one-bedroom cottage, where memories and friendships formed that lasted a lifetime.
He graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School, where he received a superior education that laid the foundation for his character and life’s work. His connection to the school remained strong throughout his life, and he later served proudly on its board for 12 years.
After graduating from Boston College, Paul joined Touche Ross, and as a young CPA, his work ethic and even, unflappable presence set him apart. He rose through the ranks to become an audit partner at what is now Deloitte before moving into leadership roles as Chief Financial Officer for several companies, including Marshall Brothers Contractors, Geltex Pharmaceuticals, Trine Pharmaceuticals, and Enanta Pharmaceuticals where he was employed for the last 22 years.
Although his titles were impressive, what defined his 48-year career was not the positions he held but the way he fulfilled them. With integrity and steadiness, he mentored countless colleagues and demonstrated that success never had to come at the expense of kindness. He also dedicated his time as a board member of Norwood Hospital and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Boston, continuing his commitment to service.
Paul married Amanda Weissgerber on May 31, 2019, in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts. They both understood what an extraordinary gift it was to find one another, and they were deeply grateful for it. Amanda survives him, along with his children, Brian and Erin, and his grandchildren, Luke and Emma, all four of whom were his daily sources of pride and delight. He is also survived by his sister, Michelle (Neal) Madden, nephews David and Patrick Madden, and by a wide circle of dear friends, many of them lifelong, whom he cherished and stayed close to across the years and miles. His niece, Nichole Madden Sun, preceded him in death.
Paul wasn’t just a nice guy. He was the rare kind of person whose goodness was unmistakable. He was trusted instantly, the sort of person who made you feel comfortable just by being in the room. He gave his time and attention freely, with no expectation in return. Whether it was a stranger needing directions or a friend facing hardship, Paul met people with patience, dignity, and gentleness. He gave generously, always quietly, often anonymously, never seeking recognition, only hoping to lighten someone else’s load.
His life was built from these countless small acts of goodness, which, taken together, became something uncommon and beautiful. And for those who knew him best, there was also his playful side: his near-encyclopedic knowledge of late 1960s and early 1970s muscle cars and music, as well as his fondness for quoting the Three Stooges that delighted fellow fans. He could recite the specs of a 1969 Camaro or drop into a Stooges line with the same enthusiasm, both equally part of who he was.
The family will receive condolences at Xaverian Brothers High School chapel on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 4 pm to 7 pm. On Friday, September 5, 2025, at noon, his funeral will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Parish in Roslindale, the church where Paul was baptized, confirmed, and where his parents were married. He will be laid to rest at St. Francis Cemetery in Walpole, Massachusetts.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Xaverian Brothers High School Class of 1973 Fund or the Mass General Cancer Center. The family extends heartfelt thanks to nurse practitioner Erika Meneely, Dr. Matthew Smith, and the team at Massachusetts General Hospital for their extraordinary care and compassion during the last 16 months of Paul’s life.
