William Chase Newhall

July 7, 1940 — March 7, 2021

William C Newhall died peacefully on March 7, 2021 surrounded by family.  He was born on July 7, 1940 to Donald Newhall and Priscilla (Hawes) Newhall of Lynn.  He is survived by wife, Sandra (Lans) Newhall of 6 years, son William Newhall  and wife Laura(Dragon) of Uxbridge; daughter  Mary and husband Raymond Miller of Hopedale; daughter Priscilla and husband Raymond Claus of Raleigh NC, sister-in-law, Sandra Van Voorhis; and  brother-in-law,  Tom Doty.  He is also survived by his grandchildren: Catherine Claus and husband Corey Peatman, Rebecca and Alex Miller, Erin, and Thomas Newhall; and great granddaughter, Lily Peatman.  He was predeceased by his first wife, Catherine (Doty), brother, Guy Newhall, and grandson, James Claus.

Bill lived in Walpole, MA most of his life, graduating from Walpole High School in 1958. He went to the University of Michigan for one year where he met his first wife, Catherine.  The following year he transferred to Worcester Polytech Institute, where he graduated in 1963.  Upon graduation, he spent his entire career in mechanical engineering at Harwood Engineering, a company his father founded in 1947; where they excel at the cutting edge of high-pressure technology.

He enjoyed his time with his children and grandchildren.  The kids remember annual trips to the Michigan farm and bridge games on weekends or a random trip to Fort Ticonderoga or to N.H.  The kid’s spouses had to be indoctrinated on learning how to play bridge.  When his daughter, Mary, brought home a guinea pig, the family ended up with many generations of offspring, which Bill really enjoyed.

He advocated for the best education for the children.

With the grandchildren, he was involved in their concerts, vacations, holidays and, of course, taught them how to play bridge.

All who have known Bill will remember his generosity, his love of books and opera.  We all loved how he brought history to life (his unfulfilled dream was to become a high school history teacher).  He shared his extensive model railroad collection with his grandchildren.

With Sandra, they traveled, enjoyed concerts at Providence Philharmonic, and were avid local sport fans.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in William’s name could be made to the Walpole Food Pantry ,P.O Box 43, Walpole, MA 02081.
