James Joseph Armstrong Jr., age 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at his home in Walpole, Massachusetts, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts on September 1, 1932, he was the son of the late James and Mary L. (Regan) Armstrong. He was raised in Norwood, where he was a strong member of the Norwood High School football and track teams. Following his graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during the Korean War. Upon his return to civilian life, Jim enrolled and completed his degree from Boston University.
Jim married his wife, Helena Clark, and began his career in the insurance industry, taking a position with Mutual of New York Insurance Company. Jim's career blossomed, becoming a million-dollar producer eight years in a row. Jim dedicated himself to his work, taking a training position with Mutual of NY in their Broadway, New York location. In the early 1960's, Jim and Helena moved to Boston, settling in Mattapan, and he took a position with the Insurance Benefits Office at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton. Sadly, Helena passed away in December of 1964.
The following year, Jim met Corinne Ellen Richard, and they were married on June 26, 1965. They traveled to Southington, Connecticut, where they made their home together, as Jim served as the manager of the MONY accounts at Yale University, earning distinction and serving as the President of the Life Underwriters of CT. In 1972, Jim moved his family back to Massachusetts, settling in the small town of Walpole, where he was an Insurance Executive for the regional office of Mutual of NY for 30 years. Following his retirement from his insurance position, Jim took a position as a Court Officer with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Trial Court in Dedham.
Jim was also dedicated to the local community having served for twenty years with the Walpole Housing Authority, Board of Directors, holding the position of chairman for two years. He had an instrumental role with the Walpole Little League program, serving as president for several years, raising money for uniforms and equipment, in addition to serving on the committee to establish Restaino Fields on West Street. Jim also joined several organizations in the area, including the DAV Chapter 90, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) Lodge 1124, and the Knights of Columbus Council 252 all in Norwood.
Jim enjoyed life and took great pride in his family; he was always ready to show the picture of the 12 kids and loved to talk about them all. He looked forward to spending time on the golf course with his friends and as an avid Boston sports fan, he was always ready to cheer for his hometown teams. Most of all, Jim loved being surrounded by his family and was delighted at the birth of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, knowing the Armstrong family legacy will be carried on for generations to come.
