March 2, 1922 ~ January 18, 2021 (age 98)

Obituary

Virginia Anne (Sullivan) Sweeney, age 98, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021 at Traditions of Dedham.  Born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Florence and Nora (O'Malley) Sullivan.  She was raised in Dorchester and graduated from the Jeremiah Burke High School with the Class of 1940.  Following her graduation, Virginia continued her education, earning her secretarial certificate, allowing her to take a position with a Boston Law Firm.

Virginia met her husband to be, Ralph E. Sweeney, at a USO sponsored dance in South Boston.  They were married on October 28, 1950 in Saint Peter's Church in Dorchester and made their first home in Mattapan, where they raised their family.  She and Ralph spent thirty years in Mattapan and Virginia always stayed active in the local parish, St. Gregory's, joining the woman's group and helping the Nuns.  In the 1980s, Virginia and Ralph left the big city, settling into their home at Conifer Green in Kingston, Massachusetts.  Virginia became active in her new community, taking part in the many activities offered at Conifer Green and joining the woman's group at Saint Joseph's Church.  Throughout her life, Virginia's faith remained strong and she always found a way to give back to her beloved church.

Virginia loved to travel with her husband Ralph and looked forward to venturing out on many tours throughout the world.  Back at home, she was the consummate homemaker, always caring for her large extended family.  She ensured that there was a delicious meal on the table, followed by one of her famous baked goodies for dessert.  Virginia took great care to remember all the important moments in her families lives, sending a card to everyone, reminding those she loved that they were in her thoughts.  She was especially close to her twin sister, Florence's, family, as they shared a very special bond.

Beloved wife of the late Ralph E. Sweeney.
Loving mother of Anne T. Pilvines and her late husband,  John, of Sharon, Mark X. Sweeney of North Carolina, the late Russell V. Sweeney and his surviving wife, Mary Sweeney-Gengler of South Dakota, and the late Regina M. Gatter and her surviving husband, Stephen, of Natick.
Cherished grandmother of nine and great grandmother of ten.
Sister of the late Augustine Sweeney, the late Girard Sweeney, the late Mary Candage, the late Florence Murphy, and the late Brendan Sweeney.
